Orheiul Vechi (Old Orhei) is a striking archaeological and ecclesiastical complex set in a dramatic limestone valley carved by the Răut River, located about 50km north of Chișinău. It is widely regarded as one of Moldova's most important cultural and historical sites, blending ancient ruins, cave monasteries, and living village life into a single landscape.
The history of Old Orhei spans three main epochs - the Paleolithic, Eneolithic, and Iron Age, with archaeologists having uncovered the earthen and wooden remains of Geto-Dacian fortresses dating from the 6th to 1st centuries B.C. Over the following centuries, the site continued to be inhabited and transformed: it has been home to Dacian fortresses, Tatar fortifications, medieval monasteries, and traditional Moldovan villages. Visitors today can still see the remains of baths built during the Golden Horde era, alongside cave monasteries carved directly into the limestone cliffs.
In 2009, the local government of the Republic of Moldova approved the reorganization of the Museum Complex into the Public Institution of the Orheiul Vechi Cultural-Natural Reserve, with a mandate to conserve and restore the landscape and historical legacy of the area.
Carved directly into the cliffs overlooking the Răut River, this is one of the most iconic sights of the complex, a cave monastery overlooking the river, alongside remains of Tatar baths and traditional Moldovan houses.
The Răut River winds through the gorge past picturesque traditional Moldovan villages like Butuceni and Trebujeni, which in recent years have seen significant growth in guesthouses and tourism services, offering visitors an authentic taste of rural Moldovan life.
The museum complex has an exhibition center featuring valuable archaeological finds discovered on-site during excavation works, including artifacts spanning thousands of years of settlement.
Nearby highlights worth combining with a visit include the peaceful 19th-century Curchi Monastery, 15km west of Orhei city.
The reserve offers marked hiking trails that follow the course of the Răut River through both the Orheiul Vechi and Zolonceni nature reserves, and has become a pilot area for birdwatching, home to around 100 bird species, a third of all species that can be observed in Moldova, across floodplains, forests, waters, villages, and farmland.
